MEASURES OF VARIABILITY

MEASURES OF VARIABILITY
1.       The following scores were obtained by a class in a 15-item test in social science.
Boys: 9, 10, 13, 6, 10, 6, 9, 10, 8
Girls: 9, 7, 5, 12, 3, 8, 10, 2, 8, 10, 14, 7

Find the range, mean deviation, standard deviation, and variance.
a)      For the boys
b)      For the girls
c)       For the whole class
Use a calculator and interpret the results.

2.       Data on mental ability of a third-year high school class were recorded and are given below.
85           92           100         104         110         119         125         86           95           102         106
112         120         130         90           98           103         107         115         124

Assuming that the mean ±0.50 of a standard deviaton is considered average, how many in the class are considered average? Use a calculator.

3.       A mental ability test was administered to ten students.  The results are shown below:
110         105         120         115         137         122         108         112         114         124

Find the mean and standard deviation.

4.        The numbers of hours worked last week by employees at a San Rafael Plant have been grouped in the following frequency distribution.  Determine the standard deviation.

Hours                    Number of Workers
50  - 55                                  45
46 – 50                                  44
41 – 45                                  50
36 – 40                                  40
31 – 35                                  16
26 – 30                                  5

5.       The following is the frequency distribution of the weights of 50 patients admitted in a hospital during the week.

Weight (kilos)                    Number of Patients
71 – 75                                                  7
66 – 70                                                  9
61 – 65                                                  14
56 – 60                                                  10
51 – 55                                                  6
46 – 50                                                  4

6.       A hospital administrator compared the age with the emergency admissions on a given Monday with those Friday of the same week.

Age                                        Monday               Friday
61 – 70                                  8                              3
51 – 60                                  6                              6
41 – 50                                  5                              12
31 – 40                                  9                              14
21 – 30                                  10                           10
11 – 20                                  9                              8
1   -  10                                  7                              7

Calculate the standard deviation for each set of data and compare the age dispersion in the Monday and Friday admissions.

Table 2.4 shows that the secondary school administrators were rated by the master teachers very satisfactory in “Planning and Organizing Work” as indicated by the grand weighted mean of 4.24.  This tends to show that the secondary administrators were proficient in organizing the schools’ year long activities.
